The first sighting of the day was just outside of Horta harbor!

It was a small group of Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), being very calm at the surface. The group had mainly adults and old adults, we knew this because most of them were totally white.

The risso's dolphins have extremely sensitive skin, acquiring scars very easily. So, normally, as older the risso's dolphin is the whiter it will be.


After we went to see some baleen whales!

It was two sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis). They were traveling side by side, going in the direction of West.


At one point we noticed that one of the whales had some fishing gear stuck on its head!

Unfortunately, fishing gear is one of the main threats for baleen whales.

O nosso primeiro avistamento de hoje foi mesmo à porta de casa!


Perto do Monte da Guia estava um grupo de golfinhos de Risso (Grampus griseus), bastante calmos à superfície.

O grupo era constituído na sua maioria por adultos, sendo que a maioria tinha coloração branca.

Os golfinhos de risso tem a pele bastante sensível, adquirindo cicatrizes muito facilmente, dando assim uma cor branca ao animal.

Quanto mais velho é o animal, mais branco será.


Após o avistamento dos golfinhos de risso fomos avistar baleias de barbas!

Quando chegámos ao local podemos confirmar a espécie e eram duas baleias sardinheiras (Balaenoptera borealis) a navegar lado a lado e com direção a oeste.


Uma delas tinha um fio de pesca preso no dorso. Infelizmente, equipamentos de pesca são uma das principais ameaças para estes animais.
