|05-06-2019| Dolphin day! First sighting of Atlantic-Spotted dolphins in Faial
We had a swimming with dolphins' activity so we searched for dolphins, and we found them, with the help of our spotter from Monte da Guia "Torrão" - 4 different species: Bottlenose (Trusiops truncatus), Stripped (Stenella coeruleoalba), Atlantic spotted (Stenella frontalis) and Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis).
The Atlantic Spotted dolphins can look alike small sized Bottlenose dolphins when they are juveniles as they miss the characteristic spots, but they change coloration when they grow. In the previous picture you can see the difference.
Some Cory's Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) were interacting with the dolphins.
