|11102020| Biggest fish in the world and biggest toothed whale

Today was a big day full of big animals!


For the past few days, whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) have been sighted in the south of Pico! These are rare sightings, the whale sharks in the Azores are normally seen in Santa Maria Island.


Today we went to try to find them! In this tour, we follow the code of conduct that is established by WWF (World Wide Fund), for the snorkel with whale sharks. If you want to know more about this code of conduct you can drop a visit to www.atlanticnaturalist.org.

It took us a long while but after a few hours, we managed to see not one but two whale sharks!!


We also saw two sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), the biggest toothed whale! One of them was very calm and close to us. :)

Um dia em grande cheio de grandes animais!


Nos últimos dias tem sido avistados, regularmente, tubarões baleia (Rhincodon typus) no sul da Ilha do Pico! São avistamentos bastante raros, sendo que nos Açores estes animais são normalmente avistados apenas na ilha de Santa Maria.


Hoje fomo à procura do maior peixe do mundo! Nesta expedição seguimos o código de conduta estabelecido pela WWF (World Wide Fund) para snorkel com tubarões baleia. Se quier saber mais sobre este código de conduta visite www.atlanticnaturalist.org.

Tivemos que esperar várias horas mas conseguimos avistar dois tubarões baleia!


Neste mesma expedição também conseguimos avistar dois cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus), a maior baleia com dentes! Um esteve bastante calmo e próximo de nós :)
