|15-07-2019 am| Sperm whales and Striped dolphins in Faial, Azores

A pod of 10 Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) showed up in the North of Faial Island. One of the animals breached out, giving us the opportunity to see their large body. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) were also found by the spotters in land. We moved to their location in order to collect images of their dorsal fins (for photo-identification) and from major importance to us as researchers, to study their behaviour in the presence of whale watching boats. During July until October we will have a researcher onboard with a specific project to study the acoustic and behaviour of the Azorean dolphins population.
