On our second expedition of the year, we were beyond thrilled to spot the first Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) of the season in the waters between Faial and Pico—a truly unforgettable sight. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we found a second Blue Whale! These ocean giants migrate past the Azores every spring, and witnessing them up close is always a breathtaking experience.
Adding to the magic, we encountered a lively pod of Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis), gracefully riding the waves and showing some curiosity toward us and the boat. Their playful energy never fails to amaze!
Beyond the cetaceans, we also spotted a Portuguese Man o' War (Physalia physalis), its delicate, gas-filled float shimmering in the sunlight as the wind carried it close to our boat. A small but striking reminder of the rich and diverse marine life in our waters.
