Muito Obrigado! Thank you for supporting our research and help us collect data.

We recorded cetacean numbers, behavior and photo-ID, counted Portuguese man-o-war aggregations and sizes

Today, we ventured into the southern waters of Faial, where we had the incredible opportunity to observe two different dolphin species swimming together. A pod of Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis), known for their energetic behavior and striking hourglass pattern, was joined by a smaller group of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). These two species don’t always travel together, making it a fascinating sight to see them interacting in the same area. The larger, more robust Bottlenose Dolphins moved gracefully alongside the sleek, fast-moving Common Dolphins, creating a beautiful contrast in size and behavior.

As we enjoyed this special encounter, a spectacular rainbow appeared over the city, offering us a breathtaking and colorful farewell from nature itself.

Another exciting sign of the changing season was the return of Cory’s Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis). These iconic seabirds, which spend months out at sea, have begun to arrive back in the Azores to breed. Watching them glide effortlessly over the waves was a wonderful reminder that spring is just around the corner!

After spending time observing the dolphins' social interactions and watching them surf the waves, we continued our journey along the coast of Faial. We explored some sea caves, admired the scenic Porto Pim Bay, and passed by volcanic landscapes, each stop revealing another layer of the island’s rich geological and marine beauty.

Every trip brings new surprises, and we can’t wait for the next adventure! Stay tuned for more updates.

We hope you enjoyed your trip & see you again on another opportunity!
