We observed more than 10 Sperm whales in the South of Castelo Branco, Faial Island this morning.
Esta manhã a equipe da Naturalist.pt nos Açores observou mais de 10 cachalotes a sul de Castelo Branco, Ilha do Faial.
The windy conditions did not allow for great images to be collected. The group was composed of females and juveniles and kept diving towards west. The team managed to collect several samples: images and biological material.
O grupo teria mais de 20 animais, e era composto por fêmeas e juvenis que continuaram durante o período de observação a mergulhar na direcção de Oeste, do banco submarino Condor. As condições de vento não permitiram a recolha de imagens de particular qualidade tendo registado cerca de duas dezenas de animais e conseguido a recolha de diverso material biológico.
One large female left floating the upper beak of a cephalopod expelled through the digestive system. This will allow identifying the squid species which had been eating by this sperm whale. Squid beaks are made of chitin and last long on the three digestive sacs of sperm whale stomachs, and some are never expelled; so this squid may actually be from tropical or other regions of the world revealing more than we can expect.
Uma das fêmeas de mariores dimensões deixou a flutuar um bico superior de lula, expelido através do seu sistema digestivo. Isto permitirá identificar a espécie de lula que esta baleia terá comido. Os bicos de lula são constituídos de quitina, e duram muito tempo no sistema digestivo das baleias, chegando alguns a ficar retidos nos estômagos das mesmas toda a vida; portanto esta lula poderá revelar por onde terá andado esta baleia.
Thanks to all Naturalists from different countries of the world that chose Faial Azores and the Naturalist Team to do Whale watching today, a group of children from a local school had the chance to see the monster and the wildlife secrets their ocean keep. Their smile is the best thing in the world!
